Using this technique, one proves inequalities about scalars (or matrices) by embedding them in a clever way into a (larger) matrix. Here is another example of the matrix technique, adapted from the proof of Theorem 12.9 of <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.7907\/m421-yb89\">these lecture notes<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/tropp.caltech.edu\">Joel Tropp<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jensen%27s_inequality\">Jensen&#8217;s inequality<\/a> is a far-reaching and very useful inequality in probability theory.
